We rebuilt onboarding for Fieldnote last quarter. Activation went from 31% to 54%. Here is what actually moved the number.
1. We cut the signup form to email only. Name, company, and role moved to a later step, after the first success moment.
2. The empty state became a task. Instead of “Create your first project”, we imported a sample project and asked people to change one thing.
3. We emailed once, 20 minutes after signup, with the one action that people who stuck around had all taken. No drip sequence.
4. Pricing moved off the onboarding path. People saw it when they hit a limit, not before they had done anything.

Every empty state is a tiny onboarding page. Treat it like one: one sentence, one action, one example.

Unpopular opinion: the best empty state is data. Import something before you ask for a decision.

Bookmarks that are worth more than a scroll.
A saved post is a Markdown document with its text, media, quoted posts, and linked pages. It behaves like everything else in your library.
A thread you want to read properly
Read a long thread as one document, with the linked article saved beside it, instead of scrolling through replies on X.
Bookmarks you never look at again
Search the text of every saved post. Find that pricing thread by a phrase you remember, not by scrolling back through months.
An existing bookmark library
Import a CSV or JSON export from a browser exporter to bring older bookmarks into the same searchable library.
04.
Saved posts work like the rest of your library.
Each post or thread becomes a saved item with a link back to X. Search it, quote it in a note, or open it from a connected AI client.

Questions about X bookmarks.
Do I need X Sync to save posts?
No. Personal saves public posts and threads through Capture, the browser extension, CLI, API, or MCP. X bookmark sync adds automatic private bookmark sync and public profile following.
How much does X Sync cost?
X bookmark sync is $5/month on top of Personal. It requires an active Personal plan.
Can Keep import all of my existing bookmarks?
Sync starts from now or runs one capped backfill of recent bookmarks. For a complete snapshot, export your bookmarks with a browser exporter such as ilo, then import the CSV or JSON file in Settings → Data → Import.
Does Keep save the pages a post links to?
Yes. Direct saves and X Sync save linked pages as Markdown and attach them to the X item. For bookmark sync, turn on Capture links in the account controls.
Does Keep save images and the text in them?
Keep saves useful post and article images. Turn on Read text from X images in Settings → General to add readable text from up to four text-heavy images to each new X item.
What happens if I disconnect my X account?
Existing items stay in Keep. Future bookmarks from that account stop syncing.
