# Markdown table generator

Use the visual Markdown table editor, or paste CSV, spreadsheet cells, HTML, or an existing Markdown table.

## How to use this tool

Edit the grid or import a pasted table, set each column alignment, then copy the live Markdown source or download a .md file.

## Keep anything useful as Markdown.

Save notes, links, pages, files, and other useful material as clean Markdown. Read it later, search it, or use it with an AI agent.

## How to make a Markdown table

1. Enter your column names in the header row.
2. Add rows and columns, then fill in the cells.
3. Set each column to default, left, center, or right alignment.
4. Check the live Markdown and rendered table side by side.
5. Copy the Markdown or download the `table.md` file.

## Convert CSV, spreadsheet cells, and HTML tables to Markdown

The Paste data tab handles the formats people already have. CSV values can contain commas and quoted line breaks. Cells copied from Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers arrive as tab-separated data, so you can paste a selected range without saving a file first.

If you have a complete workbook instead of copied cells, the [Excel to Markdown converter](https://keep.md/tools/excel-to-markdown) handles XLSX, XLS, XLSM, XLSB, ODS, Numbers, and ET files. The focused [CSV to Markdown converter](https://keep.md/tools/csv-to-markdown) handles pasted CSV or a .csv file without an upload.

HTML tables work too. Paste a `<table>` element and the editor keeps its text, rows, columns, and supported alignment. An existing Markdown table comes back into the grid for another round of edits.

## How Markdown table alignment works

The separator row controls alignment. A colon on the left aligns a column left, a colon on the right aligns it right, and colons at both ends center it. The visual controls write those markers for you.

You do not need to count pipes or pad columns by hand.

```
| Item  | Price | Status |
| :---- | ----: | :----: |
| Book  | £12   | Ready  |
| Notes | £4    | Review |
```

## Headers, pipes, and line breaks stay valid

GitHub-style Markdown needs a header and separator row, so the first row in the editor is always the header. Pipes inside a cell are escaped. Line breaks become `<br>` tags so one cell does not split the source into two table rows.

Markdown cannot merge cells. An imported HTML table with `rowspan` or `colspan` is expanded into normal cells, with the original value kept in the first cell of the merged area.

## Use the table in notes, docs, and agent context

The output works in GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, many documentation systems, and Markdown files used by AI agents. If the table came from structured data, the [JSON to Markdown converter](https://keep.md/tools/json-to-markdown) can create a table or document. If it came from a larger page, the [HTML to Markdown converter](https://keep.md/tools/html-to-markdown) can convert the surrounding content. The [token counter](https://keep.md/tools/token-counter) shows how much context a finished document will use.

## Frequently asked questions

Enter the header labels in the first row, add your data below them, and choose the alignment for each column. The Markdown and rendered preview update as you type. Copy the source or download it as a .md file when the table is ready.

Yes. Open Paste data and paste CSV with commas, quoted values, and line breaks. The tool turns each CSV record into an editable row before it creates the Markdown table.

Yes. Copy the cells in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, or another spreadsheet and paste them into Paste data. Copied spreadsheet cells use tabs between columns, which the tool detects automatically.

Yes. Paste the complete table element or HTML that contains a table. The tool reads the first table, keeps the cell text, expands merged cells into the grid, and creates a Markdown table from it.

Use the alignment menu above each column. Left adds a colon before the separator dashes, right adds one after them, and center adds a colon at both ends. Default leaves the separator as dashes.

CommonMark does not define tables, but GitHub-style Markdown tables need one header row followed by a separator row. This tool always treats the first editable row as the header so the result works in GitHub, Obsidian, and many Markdown editors.

A pipe is escaped so it does not start a new column. A line break becomes an HTML br tag because Markdown table rows must stay on one source line. Most GitHub-style Markdown renderers display that break correctly.

Yes. Table editing, import, preview, copy, and download all run in your browser. Your data is not uploaded, and there is no daily conversion limit for this tool.
