# Read and use saved Items

Read saved content as Markdown, create highlights, connect evidence to Notes, and copy or download the result.

Open an Item from the [Feed](https://keep.md/docs/feed) to read its saved content. Keep shows the source, saved date, summary, tags, collections, and available Markdown.

## Move between Items

Use the previous and next controls to move through the current Feed results. You can also use the left and right arrow keys.

The reader keeps the Feed search and filters while you move between Items.

## Wait for processing

Some Items need time for content extraction, transcription, or another import job. The Item is saved immediately, stays available from your Feed, and updates when processing finishes.

If extraction fails, read the error and select **Retry**. The original source link remains available when Keep cannot extract full content.

## Read saved content

Keep renders saved content as Markdown. The reader supports headings, lists, links, images, code blocks, tables, and quotations.

Some Items contain two related views:

- **Discussion** shows the post or conversation that linked to a source.
- **Source** shows the attached article or page.

Use the tabs to move between them. Each view keeps its own source link and content.

## Add a highlight

1. Open an Item with saved text.
2. Select the highlighter control.
3. Select the text that you want to keep.

Hold `Shift` while you select text to add a note to the new highlight. Highlight mode stays active until you close it or press `Escape`.

Select an existing highlight to edit its note, extend the saved text, or delete it. Deletion is permanent.

Keep warns you when a saved highlight no longer matches the current text. The highlight remains in the Item details so you do not lose it.

Use **Highlights only** to hide text that has no highlights. Highlights made with the [browser extension](https://keep.md/docs/extension) appear in the same view.

## Connect an Item to a Note

Use **Add note** from the Item actions to create a Note that links back to the Item. The Item becomes a source for that Note. It does not become editable Note content.

The reader lists every connected Note. Open a Note to review the decision, handoff, or other context that uses the Item.

See [Notes](https://keep.md/docs/notes) for link relations and revision history.

## Edit Item details

Use the Item actions to:

- edit the title and your saved reason
- add or remove tags
- add or remove collections
- ask Keep to suggest tags
- mark the Item as processed or needing context
- subscribe to a detected source
- send a supported article to Kindle

See [Tags and collections](https://keep.md/docs/organize) for organisation rules.

## Copy or download Markdown

Open the Item actions. Select **Copy Markdown** to place the saved content on your clipboard. Select **Download Markdown** to save a `.md` file.

The output can include source frontmatter, a summary, and the saved body. The available sections depend on the Item and your plan.

## Archive or delete an Item

Archive an Item when you want to remove it from the normal Feed without losing it. You can include archived Items in an [export](https://keep.md/docs/export).

Delete an Item only when you do not need it again. Bulk deletion and Item deletion are permanent.
