# Save anything useful in Keep

Use Keep to save links, upload documents, transcribe audio, capture screenshots, and create Markdown notes from one menu.

The Capture menu is the quickest way to save something as Markdown. Write a note, save a link, upload a file, transcribe audio, or capture a screenshot.

Open the menu with the **Capture** button in the app header. You can also press `Command Shift C` on macOS or `Control Shift C` on Windows and Linux. The older `Command Shift K` and `Control Shift K` shortcuts also open Capture.

## Choose what you want to capture

The menu has six actions.

| action | what it does |
| --- | --- |
| Write | Creates a Markdown note |
| Link | Saves a web page to Saved |
| Media | Uploads one or more files |
| Audio | Uploads an audio file for transcription |
| Screenshot | Captures a screen, window, or browser tab as a PNG |
| Search | Opens Keep search |

## Write a note

Use a note for a decision, idea, handoff, plan, or anything else you wrote.

1. Open **Capture**.
2. Select **Write**.
3. Add a title if the note needs one.
4. Write the body in Markdown.
5. Select **Save note**.

The new note opens in the note editor. You can add a Project, state, kind, tags, and other properties there. The [notes guide](https://keep.md/docs/notes) explains how those fields work.

## Save a link

1. Open **Capture**.
2. Select **Link**.
3. Paste the page URL.
4. Add a collection if you use one for this work.
5. Add any useful tags.
6. Write why you saved the page in **Notes**.
7. Select **Save link**.

Keep adds the page to Saved. Personal also keeps readable page content when extraction is available. The saved item remains available while any background processing finishes.

## Paste or drop something into Keep

Keep watches for useful clipboard and file input while you use the app.

- Paste a web URL to save it to Saved.
- Paste a file to upload it.
- Drop files anywhere in the app to upload them.
- Drop one Markdown file to create a note.
- Drop an audio file to open the transcription form.
- Drop a supported bookmark or subscription export to open the matching import flow.

A dropped Markdown file keeps its supported frontmatter. This includes the title, Project, repository, kind, state, tags, and custom properties.

Keep accepts one Markdown file at a time. Drop several other supported files together when they belong in the same upload.

## Upload documents and images

Document uploads require Personal.

1. Open **Capture**.
2. Select **Media**.
3. Select one or more files.
4. Turn on **Summarize uploaded documents** if you want a summary.
5. Select **Upload**.

The current upload form accepts PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, images, HTML, XML, and OpenDocument files. Keep converts supported documents to Markdown and adds them to Saved.

## Transcribe audio

Audio transcription requires Personal. Keep accepts MP3, M4A, and WAV files up to 100 MB.

1. Open **Capture**.
2. Select **Audio**.
3. Choose one audio file.
4. Check the estimated duration.
5. Select **Upload audio**.

Keep opens the new item while transcription runs. The item updates when the transcript is ready.

## Capture a screenshot

1. Open **Capture**.
2. Select **Screenshot**. The first time, Keep explains what happens next. Select **Continue**.
3. Choose the screen, window, or tab in your browser prompt.
4. Confirm the share.

Keep captures the current frame as a PNG and adds it to Saved. Press Escape in the browser prompt to cancel without saving anything. Your browser may hide this option when screen capture is unavailable.

## Capture from another app

The [browser extension](https://keep.md/docs/extension) saves pages and highlights without opening Keep first. The [mobile sharing guide](https://keep.md/docs/mobile) covers the iOS Shortcut and the Android share target.
